Old Themes Resurrected As Thematic Child Themes

Over at my other site, Theme Lab, I announced the concept of bringing old WordPress themes back to life. Some older themes from WPDesigner, and other popular themes back in the day are no longer supported by their developers.

I proposed the idea to port them as Thematic child themes because Thematic is a free, popular, and open source theme framework where the older themes would be brought new life, so to speak.

The first resurrected theme of one of WPDesigner’s first themes is called Braintied, check it out. It’s a Thematic child theme, so remember how to install a child theme.

Thematic Gallery Launched

Thematic Gallery is a showcase of sites powered by the Thematic theme framework. It looks like it’s running a modified version of Chris Wallace’s Gallery theme and is looking great.

You might be able to see some of these Thematic sites in @iandstewart’s tweets, although it’s nice to have them all collected into one site. Really shows all the amazing things you can do with this theme framework.

Create Your Own Theme Framework

Hybrid 0.6 Released

Justin Tadlock, designer of the Hybrid theme, recently announced that Hybrid 0.6 has been released. This release has a number of new features, a lot of which are WordPress 2.8 specific. Unfortunately with all these new features, the latest version of Hybrid is not backwards compatible with previous versions of WordPress.

Much more lightweight than previous versions of Hybrid, with improvements to CSS and Javascript to make it faster
A number of new templates, mostly those for different types of archive pages
New theme options page
New layout stylesheets for designers
New body classes
Can now separate trackbacks from comments

Make sure you have WordPress 2.8 installed and then go to the Hybrid page to grab the latest version.

Thematic 0.9.5 Released

Ian Stewart, designer of the Thematic theme, recently announced that the Thematic version 0.9.5 has been released. With this update are a number of new features and refinements, some of which are listed below:

Extension files in the library are now better organized and documented
Each default widget area is now hookable
Hook before and after the main loops (may be useful for magazine themes)
Default widgets are no longer coded in the sidebar template files
More dynamic body classes

Hopefully these new changes will make it even easier for developers to create awesome new Thematic child themes.
